Another Injury: A Setback But Still On Course For The Scottish 10K

My preparations for the Scottish 10k at the end of September were going well.

That was until yesterday when I was out running.

I started the first section of an interval run and suddenly felt my hamstring strain.

It was like a sharp stabbing pain in my upper right leg.

I immediately had to stop and even walking was painful.

It reminded me of what happened to Usain Bolt in the World Championships in the 4×100 meters race.

Listen To Your Body

Before I ventured out, my right leg felt quite stiff.

I thought twice about running because of that and I should’ve listened to my body.

Train As One, the online training site I’m using, had interval training on my calendar two days in a row.

The fast intervals really push me and doing five of them in one session is just about okay.

I was surprised when it then gave me the same training the following day.

I should’ve followed my instincts and put that session back at least one day.

Time For A Rest

I’d reached the halfway point of my training session when my hamstring twinged.

I had over 3 miles to hobble back home.

Lately I’ve not being taking my mobile phone with me running.

My headphones just keep falling out when I’m running so I left them behind with my phone.

When I got back, my wife asked me why I didn’t phone her and she would have picked me up.

Doh!

So today’s been mostly about resting my leg.

Train As One has a handy feature where you can amend your schedule because of injury.

I’ve put it back until tomorrow for the next training session but that may still be too soon.

My hamstring injury is more like a dull ache today.

Hopefully it will be raring to go tomorrow.

There’s Still Time

There’s still over a month to go until the Scottish 10k.

Thankfully I’ve not injured myself badly and will be able to pick up where I left off.

All being well, I intend to run the Men’s 10K Edinburgh race too in November.

After that perhaps a leap into the world of half marathons.

I never thought I’d take up running in my forties.

And now it’s something I would really miss.

I still haven’t plucked up the courage to join a running club.

I’ll give the Scottish 10k a go and see where things go from there, I guess.
